From Armando Traverso’s desk – “My Corner”.

I think I was one of the first patrons of the “L’Angolo” restaurant in Sperlonga, since at the beginning, at Luciano’s you could taste Bruschetta alla Scoglio, a monumental dish of seafood, on chairs and tables strictly in green plastic. , placed in balance, on the sloping asphalt in front of the entrance. Since then I have never stopped frequenting it, a happy victim of good food and above all of the irrepressible enthusiasm of Luciano, to whom I am linked by a deep friendship.

Since then dinners and lunches have followed one another uninterruptedly, in all seasons, with sun and rain, outdoors or indoors. On all occasions, I have never lacked that sense of hospitality, of profound welcome, which makes a public place a place in which to be in harmony with others or to enjoy your own solitude in peace.

My most recent visit to the Corner is a few days before the writing of this short testimony. It is spring and you can be outdoors, it is a beautiful, bright day, accompanied by a pleasant sea breeze. I am alone and I do not know for what strange association I am thinking of Portugal, and in particular of a few days spent in Lisbon and so I feel like cod, which as everyone knows is a fundamental food of Portuguese cuisine.

At the corner I have my favorite dishes, from traditional spaghetti with clams to paccheri with anchovies and yellow tomatoes, but I know that whatever you decide would still be a great choice. I scroll through the menu with a certain speed and here it is, I immediately find it among the main courses, grilled cod. The time to sip a sip of an excellent glass of white proposed with the usual competence by Matteo, and here comes Luciano, smiling and affectionate as always. I ask him if he shares my choice. He is enthusiastic about it and not only that, he has recently prepared a new dish, they are pizzoccheri that include a base of cod. 

I would have liked to eat just a second, since I would have had a lot to write in the afternoon, but I can’t resist Luciano’s contagious passion, so go for the first too. He tells me that he hasn’t given it a name yet, he asks me for advice, he would like there to be some reference to the elements of the dish, the pizzoccheri, the cod and the Mediterranean culinary tradition. I promise him I would have thought about it while tasting it. I am immediately conquered by the goodness of the dish, the cod is present but not invasive, and goes perfectly with the pizzoccheri, it is a curious but successful combination, I am pleasantly surprised. Then comes the grilled cod. 

It’s perfect, super fresh, cooked to perfection. 

From my table, sheltered from the sunlight by a palm tree, I can see the marina and the small pleasure boats that cut through an almost motionless sea, bathed in blue light. To conclude, Luciano offers me his revisited pastiera as a dessert, I don’t even try to resist, by now I have happily abandoned myself to his art. I am not a food critic by profession, but my work has led me to know many restaurants around the country, from family-run trattorias to starred ones. In general, I love good food and good wine that I have learned to distinguish, perhaps consumed in a welcoming place, where the guest can feel at ease. And this is what happens to me every time I have the pleasure of returning to the Corner, when I rediscover the jovial passion of Luciano, the exquisite care of Marisa, the scrupulous attention of Matteo. 

Here, this is my “Corner” . Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the name for the cod pizzoccheri‚Ķ well, I have a proposal, I would like to launch a kind of competition: go to Luciano, taste it and suggest your name which will be noted. In the end, once all the names have been collected, the name of the dish will be officially given at the unquestionable judgment of the Chef and the winner will receive … well of course, a nice plate of pizzoccheri with cod!
